Twenty Most Disturbing Trends of the Year

  • People that are willing to kill for a few dollars out of a gas station register.
  • Police who use deadly force against an obviously unarmed person when their only crime was making a bad decision or being mentally ill.
  • The preponderance of high rated shows on TV that deal with murder, child sexual abuse and autopsies—and exposing a breast is still considered bad taste.

  • ‘Celebrities’ who have no other talent than to act pretentiously rich and/or bitchy—and our culture rewards them for it.
  • Celebrities who speak out politically/religiously/racially/prejudicially when that freedom of speech has nothing to do with the reason they are on TV/films, thus not only shooting themselves in the foot, but causing the downfall of others livelihoods associated with their success.
  • Professional athletes salaries and the resultant outrageous price of a ticket to see them—thus keeping many sports lovers from ever hoping to attend an event in person.
  • Continued talk about the abysmal salaries given teachers and nothing ever done about it, but those athletes keep making more and more.
  • Using one’s religion to judge anyone other than oneself.

  • Political rhetoric aimed at gaining votes— not furthering what is right/needed.
  • The narrow definition of beauty flooding every avenue of the media.
  • Defining one’s state of health using only the B.M. I. (body mass index)
  • Our reliance on pills to mask symptoms, rather than exploring the cause. Use food/lifestyle as medicine first.
  • Mandating services for people with disabilities but not funding said services—resulting in placing overworked/underpaid purveyors of those service in the position of having to dole out said services only to the most profoundly disabled/effected, leaving many deserving to fall through the cracks.
  • People who continue to hold their unrestricted right to carry guns more dear than the thousands of lives lost to guns each year. Is the genie really too far out of the bottle or can sanity somehow prevail (see Australia)
  • Those who judge people or themselves using religious or political texts that were written by fallible men centuries ago during a vastly different time before we grew as a culture to know better.
  • Continuing to allow paparazzi to invade persons privacy just because they have a job that puts them in the spotlight of ‘celebrity’ and there are people willing to pay to see them in every private time and place.
  • Allowing the almighty buck to trumps what is right.

  • Stores that open on Thanksgiving/extend their hours round the clock because of the almighty buck—disrespecting their employees right to sleep and a family life. Those who support this trend by shopping on Thanksgiving and/or round the clock.

  • TV commercial/programs that increasingly flash lights, loud sounds and rhythms, flip-book paced pictures and colours to feed the shortened attention span so caused by this practice.
